Why Did I Write This Book?

  • I became interested in emotional intelligence initially because of some negative interactions with peers and bosses. I had to look at myself and my own conduct, which was less than perfect, and change had to come from within.
  • I read Daniel Goleman’s seminal 1996 work “Emotional Intelligence, Why it Can Matter More Than IQ” and found it inspiring. When I began to practice and apply the principles in the book I found much better responses, particularly in my working relationships.
  • As I dived deeper into EQ, I thought about how important it is for the modern governance professional to possess a range of EQ skills. They generally support boards that have evolved through necessity due to governance scandals, social upheaval, climate change, technology and more. The modern governance professional has a role as a trusted advisor to help them navigate the pressures, expectations and potential liabilities.
  • I found many books on emotional intelligence and EQ but nothing that spoke to the practical application of these skills and concepts to role of the governance professional. It was a gap that needed to be addressed.

What Can This Book Do For You?

  • The need for governance professionals to exhibit the full array of EQ based skills to build influence and impact reflects the increased status the role has been accorded, but also places a higher benchmark and accompanying skills.
  • EQ is a complex subject, yet the key components are explored in depth, with specific guidance on how those components can be utilized to build credibility, influence and deepen relationships at the highest levels of the organization.
  • This book is a unique integration of EQ and corporate governance with a practical focus.
  • It is a truly empowering book written in simple, practical language that encompasses the internal elements of self-awareness and self-regulation through to the extrinsic aspects of EQ, such as conflict resolution and relationship management.
  • This is an EQ toolkit like no other – specifically geared for you the governance professional to achieve status as a leader, coach, and trusted influencer. Keep this on your desk and refer to it often.

"Discussion on corporate governance always seems to overlook the role of the corporate secretary and other professionals in a company who actually make it work at the nuts-and-bolts level. Paul Dubal's new book offers valuable advice on making this crucial element effective."
